Pay and Wages
Many backpacking and budget travel visitors to Australia are interested in making a little money
here doing backpacker jobs to supplement their travel fund. This is possible, although because of
the necessarily transient nature of such work it not likely that the backpacking worker is going
to retire on the proceeds.
Provided the budget travel visitor has satisfied the legal requirements, there are no real
restrictions on the type of work that can be done. Again, the main restriction is available
time - a visitor is unlikely to get work as an accountant for 2 weeks, but on the other hand
working at fruit picking or cafe waiting for a short period is much more feaseable.
To give an idea of the range of pay rates available: (per hour)
| | | |
| Computer & IT | | $20 - $80 |
| Medical | | $25 - $50 |
| Accounting | | $17 - $30 |
| Secretarial | | $14 - $25 |
| Bar & Café | | $12 - $25 |
| Labouring | | $15 - $20 |
| Fruit Picking | | $10 - $17 |

These figures are meant as a general guide only. The figures suggested are gross - that is,
employers will deduct income tax from pay made to everybody.
It is a good idea for budget travel or backpacking visitors to Australia to spend some time on the internet
gathering travel information before leaving their home country. Then a structured plan can be built up which
can give some security of income from pre-arranged backpacker jobs.
